Healthy Brain and Intuition Power
Right Brain Thinking is the Hottest New Fad! Fun Ways to Enhance Your Intuition
Sounds like right brain/left brain confusion at its finest, no? It has not been confusing though it currently requires me to switch between the two different ways of processing, depending upon the subject. I have enjoyed the best that both types of intelligence have to offer. My own issue is how to combine the two ways of approaching problem solving instead of the constant switching back and forth I experience. This is an ongoing personal project.
But, I do believe that both concrete and creative ways of thinking are extremely powerful. Left brain thinking - logical, scientific, and concrete - has been highly valued in Western culture (notwithstanding the last eight years of non-analytical and fact-free governance at the national level, which is a whole new topic). My own boomer generation is a testament to in-the-box, hierarchical, authoritarian types of understanding. Not everyone has been convinced as I that intuition is a type of intelligence worth developing.
That seems to be changing. There is a burgeoning cultural awareness that the more creative, intuitive ways of processing information have enormous value in many facets of our daily personal and business lives. For instance, I was developing a talk for the Salt Lake County Library Employees on intuition last year and found several popular books that encourage interest in right brain development. For this post, I found some more that have been published since: Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future by Daniel H. Pink, My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey by Jill Bolte Taylor, Right Brain/Left Brain Leadership: Shifting Style for Maximum Impact by Mary Lou Decosterd. These are just a sample of recent efforts.
